“Save As” Technique From Neuroscience to Rapidly Increase Your Wellbeing

What I call the “Save As” technique is one of the quickest and most powerful ways to hack your mind and feel better. It’s simple, scientifically-proven and a joy to perform. Here we’ll explain how and why it works.

Watch my video on this topic here:

Much can be said for staying positive. Obviously, a positive state of mind is preferable to a negative state of mind. In one you feel happy and enthusiastic; in the other you feel depressed or anxious. But at times it can seem artificial and forced to just “make yourself” positive. It may feel like new-age nonsense.

Well, it turns out that it’s not nonsense at all. Positivity is a real and achievable goal, and there is a simple technique that can change the shape of your brain, rewiring it to be more positive: neuroplasticity – your brain literally changes when you change your outlook and behavior.

Here’s a simple technique, proven by neuroscience, explained by Dr. Rick Hanson.  I have put this into practice myself and have taught it to others with great results.

As you go about your day, you’ll likely encounter some good things: a beautiful sunrise, a sense of contentment as you shower, the pleasure of a good night’s sleep, an especially nice “good morning,” a pleasant aroma from a bakery, or a sweet moment with a friend, spouse, or child. We often take these moments in stride and quickly move on to something else. The trick is to really take them in, to make an extra effort to record them. All it takes is about twenty seconds of contemplation, twenty seconds of letting that positive experience sink in. That term says it all: sink in.

Capture life’s beautiful moments and do a “save as” to record them in your brain. Build a growing file of such positive experiences.

Let it go deep in your consciousness. Do this as often as you can. The more you do it, the more it becomes natural. These positive moments build up, make you more positive in general, and change the shape of your brain.

This same principle can be applied to any positive experience of security, contentment, acceptance, joy, or peace. The trick is to be more attuned to these feelings and then let them sink in.

By absorbing positive moments, you become more positive. By becoming more positive, you absorb more positive moments. It’s a simple, beautiful technique.
